Exciting Developments from the Digital Health AMR Hub’s Fellowships
The Digital Health AMR Hub is pleased to announce the recipients of our latest Fellowships, supporting projects that tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
1. Visualising AMR in Aquaculture: A Public Dashboard for Enhanced Policy and Awareness
This project aims to create an open-access online dashboard to visualise AMR data in aquatic systems. By integrating metagenomic sequencing with environmental data, this platform will help policymakers, researchers, and the public understand the complexities of AMR in aquaculture. Partnering with Arup, the project will utilise advanced data visualization techniques to provide insights into microbial communities, resistance genes, and environmental factors, fostering informed decision-making and raising public awareness about AMR in aquatic ecosystems.
2. Advancing Research on ESKAPEE Pathogens in Hospital Wastewater
Focusing on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), this project addresses the surveillance of AMR within hospitals in Wales, particularly among ESKAPEE pathogens. By analysing metagenomic data from hospital wastewater, the research seeks to identify and characterize AMR genes, bridging the gap between environmental and clinical data. This work aims to enhance healthcare monitoring, providing a non-invasive approach to detecting AMR, and supporting improved infection control practices in healthcare settings.
3. AMR Wastewater Surveillance in Peru
This fellowship also supports a two-week research visit to Professor Pajuelo's laboratory in Lima, Peru, to build expertise in wastewater-based AMR surveillance. The MAGIC WANDS project focuses on AMR in healthcare settings, and this collaboration aims to strengthen international partnerships and capacity building in One Health research. The fellowship will enable skill development in wastewater epidemiology.
The Hub looks forward to the insights and advancements these fellowships will bring to the field.
